Pache’s injury may affect the Phillies resigning Hoskins.Had the kid not gotten hurt,he may have gotten an extended look in left or right after Bryce returns. Now,they’re in a no-man’s land. They can’t afford to lose Nola but can they afford to pay both Nola and Hoskins? They could do a Braves and sign Bohm,Marsh, and Stott long term but can a non-Cohen owner afford to do so?

Jeff Shear

What is a non-Cohen owner? Are you referring to Steve Cohen of the Mets? Or is that a dog whistle?

Just double the ticket prices. You know it’s inflation Tom Dockery. Pass the costs on to the consumer.

You clearly don’t know how teams run their business.

Ahh, right. They’ll double the prices for food and concessions instead

Why sign Hoskins to anything? This team does not need another strikeout-prone defensive liability. We already have one in left field. If Harper is serious about first base, by all means, try that. He’s a superior athlete, he’s played the position before, let him. Say good buy to Rhys. He can join Franco, Cesar, and Alfaro, all contributors to a dark time in Phillies’ history. As for Nola, when extension talks went south during the spring, that was a definitive indication of the future. Painter is the heir apparent to Nola. That’s why the extreme caution in getting him back to form. Let Nola pitch to his brother in San Diego. Sentimentality has no place in the MLB.

Hoskins is clearly missed, he at times can carry this team and his presence in the clubhouse is where he is missed the most! Give him a one year contract to show he is healthy and go from there!!!!!!!!!!!

Keith Saeger

June 10, 2023 at 3:06 pm

He won’t take a one year contract

Rick B.

June 10, 2023 at 7:57 pm

Hoskins may have to take a a prove it one year deal next season or take say 3 yrs and 50 mil from another club, because they the Phillies will definitely offer him a one year contract tender (they want that first or second round pick) for him.

Did he say that?

Jeff Shear

Yup.

He is huge in the clubhouse and is better defensively than he gets credit for!

I’m all for a healthy extension for Bohm and Stott. These two are the most exciting, talented dudes that have come from the depths of a not-so-stellar farm system in a long time. Think Rollins/Utley. As for Marsh, I think the jury is still out regarding his hitting. I also don’t think defensively, he’s the next Andrew Jones. But Pache just may be. Hopefully, soon, he’ll replace the idiot in left field. Mabey we can dump him and his ridiculous salary to some “contender”, like the White Sox, the Guardians, or any team for some pitching. Every time I see him take a called strike it makes me sick, especially with runners on base.

They should be batting 1-2 in the lineup. No way Schwarber should be leading off. He’s a 5 or 6 slot guy. The occasional leadoff home-run does not justify wasting that leadoff spot. Stott, Bohm, Harper, Castellanos, Schwarber, Realmuto, Turner, Marsh, Rojas. Flip flop Schwarber and Castellanos for right-hand starting pitchers.

Jeff Shear

August 23, 2023 at 6:06 pm

Yes, The number of men left on base should signal a change in the lineup. Batting orders shouldn’t be sacred. The Phillies score a ton of runs and then go dry for two of three days. The need a clutch hitter, a Chase Utley or a Bob Boone type. Stott could be another Richie Ashburn (one that hits home runs) if he leads off. Bohm hits into a lot of DP’s. Realmuto does not. And he’s fast and can steal bases. Speed on the bases and at the plate could make a difference. I’d bat JT second. Harper is a clean-up guy, but he’s so reliable that he can’t bat fourth. Castellanos is not the guy to clean up despite his RBI rate. Bohm? Turner? Schwarber? Yes. As for the rest, Marsh is shaping up. (What a surprise!) Turner seems to be seeing the ball better. Maybe he’s coming out of his shell. If Harper must play first, Rojas plays center. He’s as great a defensive player as they’ve had in the outfield. But Rojas has a 30 % SO rate, and MLB averages 23 %. He swings too hard. He could be a great contact hitter, as his BA shows. And, man, can he run! Marsh covers a lot of ground in the outfield, too, and he hits in clutch situations. (Still young.) Which is why Schwarber should DH. Schwarber’s 33 home runs come with only 12 with runners on base (RISP). I guess that’s what you get when you lead off with Schwarber. (Hello, Rob???) Most of his homers are solo shots. Maybe he should bat clean up.

Why sign Hoskins? Get a real first baseman who can hit and play the field. Unload Nola and his 2 + bombs every game. This lineup needs to cut way down on the pop up’s and strikeouts, they have too much talent.Harrison, Guthrie, Ellis, and covey should not be on a major league field.

William Hammond

June 11, 2023 at 12:42 am

We have a first baseman and his name is Harper. That may be his final position if he’s adept. No word on his transition to the position. I know it’s been a while since Kalas/Whitey but I still miss them. It’s torturous listening to Kruk/McCarthy. One is a corporate hack, the other a WV idiot. They keep pushing Hoskins. This team does not need another strike-out-prone defensive liability. We have one in right field. So he can cheer from the dugout and do intense bat flips, all wrong reasons to sign this guy to anything other than a bench player. After 9-0 loss to LA a new losing streak is born. This team will be outclassed in Arizona. But please, fill CBP to capacity, buy the rivers of beer, and purchase all the team paraphernalia by all means. A city of tools.

Time to dump these walk-up songs! Really bad idea. Schwarbers song introduces the man for a usual strike out. Pathetic.

Hoskins could be let go as well as Nola. Both players are iffy as well and to sign them for multi millions makes no sense.

Cat

Nola iffy, yeah not right.

Agreed that Hoskins is worse at 1B than a Little Leaguer and Schwarber is worse in LF and can’t even hit .200!!!! And why not a chance to Darick Hall who has as much power as both and can hit at least .250 and plays a good 1B. Also can rube the boob along with pitchman mccarthy, carnival barker barkham, tough guy bobo, and blockhead davis. Why do we have to be reminded every telecast of the disgusting baseball from2012 to 2021?? Hey Smokey John….where is Branch Rickey klentak, anyway ? BTW, Harp, Stott, Bohm, Marsh, Casty, and the real Turner, is quite a solid foundation !! Just take the trash out !!

As for pitching, who was the genious that didnt re-sign Zach Eflin and David Robertson?? Why weren’t Wacha and Lugo and Eovaldi (who was right under Dombrowski’s nose) signed? Agreed that he is quite an improvement on past GM’s (although that is quite a low bar), sometimes he turns into Dumbrowski. The best players are Harper, Wheeler, Turner, Castellanos coat only money and Stott and Bohm were here already. Wow! Schwarber and Walker were great signings, hahaha, and what a wonderful trade was Moniak for a washed up Noah !!

Those 2 pitchers are decent when they are healthy but are always do candidates.

Daniel

July 22, 2023 at 10:20 pm

Very disappointing.

How long do they keep a batter on pace for 7 home runs for the season batting clean up?

william davis

August 3, 2023 at 4:34 am

Don’t waste another year for a washed up over rated Nola, can’t someone see he leads the majors in giving up home runs. He messed up not taking a contract at the beginning of the year, now you see the sub par year he’s having. The young pitchers in the minors if they were with Braves they would be in Atlanta.

Rick B.

If Lorenzen keeps pitching well he will get an offer in the $40 to $50 million range over 3 years. I can see the Phillies doing that and will make the obligatory qualifying offer for Nola and Hoskins , so if someone signs them to a long term deal they get draft compensation.

The Phillies next year would be a lot better without Hoskins, Nola and Schwarber. Use the money for more pitching

Barbara Jean

August 25, 2023 at 4:28 pm

As much as I love Nola, I can see the Phillies letting him go. I also agree with letting Hoskins go. The Phillies need pitching. It has been a real up and down situation with pitching all year long. I hope the baseball scouts for the Phillies are looking at pitchers going forward.

I haven’t seen one sports writer look at how the time clock is affecting the game… especially the pitching. Last year the Dodgers led baseball with a team era of 2.80. This year the Padres are leading baseball with a team era of 3.78… a solid run more than last year’s leader. Speeding up the game IS affecting pitchers. Just my two sense, maybe that is why some veteran pitchers (Nola) has been inconsistent?

Barry

Why the Schwarber hate? Forget his average and strikeouts, he leads the team in rbis from the leadoff position and already has 100 walks. Not to mention his home runs, he obviously should be the dh but is in left field only because of the Harper situation, I am not against moving him down in the lineup but that is a manager’s decision and not his fault. A lot of us are intrigued by a Turner-Stott 1-2 and so am I but Scwarber is a valuable guy that every team would love to have.
